How to Become Comfortable With a Great Employee Deciding to Resign and Leave Your Team

One of your best employees just gave their notice, and you’re not feeling very comfortable. You didn’t expect them to work for your company forever — or maybe you did — but you are not comfortable and didn’t see this coming. You’re not sure how you’re going to replace them, as they’re such an essential part of your team. Plus, you really like them on a personal level, so you’re going to miss seeing them every day.

While you’re not happy about this, you know you can’t change their mind, so you need to find peace with their decision. Use these tips to make the best of the situation.

Be Happy for Them

The best and brightest employees have big career plans. They don’t accept a new job without carefully thinking it over, so they clearly feel this is the best fit for them right now. While you wish this level of career satisfaction would’ve been found at your company, their decision has been made. Finding a new job you’re truly excited about doesn’t happen every day, so be happy that someone you really respect has landed an incredible opportunity.

Realize It Wasn’t Personal

It doesn’t feel great when an outstanding employee resigns. However, it’s important to realize they’ve decided to move on for the sake of their career. Their decision had nothing to do with not wanting to work alongside you anymore — it’s purely business. While it’s easy to feel personally slighted, their decision had nothing to do with you. In fact, if the two of you have a good relationship, this probably made it even harder for them to leave.

Figure Out What Went Wrong

You can’t convince this particular employee to stay, but you can make their departure a learning experience. Conduct an exit interview to find out exactly why they decided to leave your team.

For example, they might not have felt like there was room to grow, or perhaps they didn’t feel like your company offered the benefits they needed. This information will help you make meaningful changes, so you can keep other talented workers from leaving.
