5 Ways to Build Trust With Your Employees

As the boss, your employees look to you for guidance. It’s important to have their trust because, without it, job satisfaction levels plummet. Disengaged employees aren’t inclined to offer feedback that can help the team grow — or stay with the company for too long — which will negatively impact your bottom line.

Whether you’re a new manager trying to earn your team’s trust or a seasoned one working to rebuild it, here are a few tips to help you get there.

Be Consistent

If you send your team mixed signals, they won’t ever know what to expect. People don’t like this because it adds chaos to their workday. Employees want a boss who creates a stable work environment where they can feel comfortable.

Hold Yourself Accountable

Everyone makes mistakes, but not everyone owns them. Being strong enough to admit you’ve done something wrong and working to fix it is a great way to earn the confidence of your team. Don’t be the manager who passes the blame for mistakes off on your employees. Leading by example will allow you to build a team of employees who trust one another.

Keep Your Promises

People want a boss who keeps their word, so think before you speak. You might have the best of intentions, but if you frequently make empty promises, your team won’t trust you. When they say they’re going to do something, you expect them to follow through, so hold yourself to the same standard.

Don’t Play Favorites

You’re only human, so chances are, you have a favorite employee. There’s no need to feel guilty about this — unless you give the person special treatment. As the boss, it’s your job to treat each of your employees equally. If you cut one employee slack or grant them extra privileges, the rest of your team won’t trust you to guide their careers.

Plan Regular Team-Building Exercises

Employees only show a certain side of themselves at the office. Get to know your team by taking them out of the office regularly to bond in a more relaxed setting — i.e., happy hour, lunch,            or bowling. When employees know you better and feel more comfortable around you, they’ll learn to trust you.
