Internal auditors in Dallas earn a median of $95,992 in 2026, once you’re one to three years in. You’ll need a bachelor’s in accounting or finance, and most people start around $69,910 before the pay curve steepens. Here’s what the job involves, how it differs from external audit, and how to get in.
What does an internal auditor do?
An internal auditor checks whether a company’s own controls work. You look at how money moves, where it could go wrong, and whether the people involved are doing what the policy says. Then you write it up and tell someone who’d rather not hear it.
Day to day, that usually looks like this.
- Planning audits around where the risk sits rather than where it’s easiest to look
- Testing controls over cash, payroll, purchasing, inventory, and revenue
- Pulling and analyzing data to find the exceptions worth chasing
- Interviewing the people who run the process, which is most of the job
- Writing findings that a business leader will read and act on
- Following up on things you flagged last year that still aren’t fixed
- Supporting SOX testing if the company is public
The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups internal auditors with accountants and auditors at a national median of $83,680. Dallas internal auditors run ahead of that, which the salary section gets into.
What do you need to become an internal auditor in Dallas?
The education bar is firm here. Nearly every Dallas internal audit posting asks for a bachelor’s, and unlike bookkeeping or payroll, there’s no side door around it.
- A bachelor’s in accounting, finance, or management information systems
- Comfort with data, since most audit testing now starts in Excel, SQL, or a data tool rather than a sample of paper files
- Writing that a busy executive will finish reading
- The willingness to ask a question a third time when the first two answers didn’t add up
- A CPA or CIA, or visible progress toward one, which is where the pay separates
Auditors who do well are the ones who can deliver a finding without making it personal, and that’s a people skill more than an accounting one.
How is internal audit different from external audit?
External auditors work for a firm and check whether the financial statements are right. Internal auditors work for the company and check whether the business is running the way it’s supposed to.
| External | Internal | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays you | An audit firm | The company |
| What you check | The financials | Controls and risk |
| Who reads the report | Investors and lenders | The audit committee |
| Busy season | Brutal, and fixed | Spread across the year |
| Usual credential | CPA | CIA, CPA, or CISA |
| Dallas median, senior level | $109,500 | $119,900 |

A lot of Dallas internal audit departments hire straight out of public accounting, because someone with two or three years of Big Four audit already knows how to test a control and document it.
How much do internal auditors make in Dallas?
Internal auditors in Dallas earn a median of $95,992 in 2026 at the one-to-three-year level, with most between $78,536 and $113,448 depending on company size, certification, and industry. Entry-level internal audit starts around $69,910.
Compare that to the general accounting track. Entry-level internal audit starts close to what an entry-level accountant makes, but by year three the internal audit median sits well above the $79,619 a staff accountant earns. The curve is steeper, and it keeps climbing after that.
Dallas is a good market for this specifically. DFW holds one of the largest concentrations of Fortune 500 headquarters in the country, which means bigger internal audit departments, more specialized work, and a clearer path up than you’d find in most cities. Texas has no state income tax, worth $3,000 to $4,000 a year at this salary level compared to the same gross pay in a state that taxes income.

Do you need a CPA or a CIA?
Neither is required to get hired, and plenty of Dallas internal auditors hold neither. Both pay, though. Roles requiring a CPA run 10% to 20% above the ranges in our 2026 North Texas Salary Guide.
The CIA, from the Institute of Internal Auditors, is the credential built for this job specifically. It’s three exam parts and it signals you’ve chosen internal audit as a career rather than landed in it.
The CPA travels further. It opens controller and accounting leadership doors that the CIA doesn’t, so if you might want out of audit eventually, it’s the more flexible one.
The CISA matters if you want the IT audit side, which pays well and has fewer qualified people chasing it in this market.
If you’re picking one and you’re early, take the CPA. If you already know internal audit is the career, the CIA is faster and more targeted.
How do you get into internal audit without audit experience?
Four routes cover most of the people we place.
- Straight out of school. Larger Dallas companies hire internal audit associates directly, and the big finance and insurance employers run structured programs.
- Out of public accounting. Two or three years in external audit is the most common path, and it’s the one that moves you up fastest once you’re in.
- From inside the company. If you’re a staff accountant somewhere with an internal audit function, that’s a lateral move a lot of people don’t realize is available. Ask.
- From operations. Someone who ran the warehouse or the billing team knows where the process breaks down, and audit departments value that.
Whichever route, learn to analyze data before you interview. Excel at a level past pivot tables, and ideally SQL, Power BI, or Alteryx. Audit testing has shifted from sampling thirty items to examining the full population, and candidates who can do that get hired ahead of candidates who can’t.
What comes after internal auditor?
This ladder is longer than most in accounting, and the numbers climb fast.
- Senior internal auditor at a median of $119,900, usually three to five years in.
- Internal audit manager at $154,966, where you take on a team and start presenting to the audit committee.
- Director of internal audit, often called the chief audit executive, at $185,827, reporting to the board.
Internal audit also works as a route into the business. Auditors see more of how a company runs than almost anyone at their level, and Dallas companies move people out of audit into finance, risk, compliance, and operations. If the accounting side appeals more, senior accountant runs a median of $101,622.
Going the other direction, audit manager in public accounting runs $126,157, below the internal audit manager median. The tradeoff is portfolio breadth against a single company’s depth.
How do you find an internal audit job in Dallas?
- Put your data tools and the industries you’ve audited in the top third of your resume. Our resume builder covers the format.
- Quantify one audit. Scope, dollars covered, what you found, what changed because of it. Findings that led to a fix are the ones worth writing down.
- Name your frameworks. SOX, COSO, and the industry rules you’ve worked under. Employers screen for them directly.
- Look at Las Colinas, Plano, and Richardson, where a lot of the corporate headquarters with staffed audit departments sit.
- Take temp-to-hire or contract work on SOX testing. Public companies staff up for it every year, and it’s a straightforward way into a department.
If you’re hiring an internal auditor in Dallas
The candidates worth having are usually employed, and they’re getting called. A slow process loses them, and at this level a four-week interview loop is often the reason an offer gets declined rather than the money.
Decide what you’re buying. A compliance-focused auditor who executes a SOX program well and an operational auditor who surfaces problems no one asked about are different hires, and postings that ask for both tend to attract neither. If you need someone at the manager or director level, our executive search division, G.A. Rogers, handles those searches.
For staff and senior internal audit roles, our accounting and finance staffing team can send pre-screened candidates on contract, temp-to-hire, or direct hire.
