Tips For Interviewing Entry-Level Candidates

Filling an entry-level role at your company can be a challenge. When a candidate has spent little to no time in the professional world, it’s always a bit of a gamble. However, if you choose the right person, they might turn out to be the best employee you’ve ever had.

When meeting with entry-level candidates, you have to adjust your standard interview questions to match their lack of experience. Here’s a few questions to help gauge their fit for the position.

“Why do you want this job?”

Entry-level candidates are just getting their start, so they should be fresh-faced and eager to learn. Top contenders will focus on both what they’d like to learn from the job and reasons they believe they’re a great match for your company culture. These people have done their research, because they truly want the job.

Pass on anyone who has trouble articulating their reasons for applying or indicates they just need to earn a paycheck.

“What previous experience do you have that would make you successful in the role?”

They’re just getting their start in the professional world, but that doesn’t mean entry-level candidates don’t have any relevant experience. Internships, part-time jobs and even campus activities can all serve as a great foundation for a first ‘real job.’ Not only does this experience mean they may have some of the required skills, it also shows they can handle a commitment.

“Describe a time when you received negative feedback from a manager or professor. How did you proceed?”

No one is perfect all the time. Even if you hire a seriously amazing entry-level candidate, they’re going to make mistakes. This question allows you to gauge their capacity for criticism. Look for a response that focuses on learning from their mistakes and using feedback to grow. If the person indicates they were offended by the negative comments, they might not be a good choice.

“How do you envision your daily life in this job?”

Most entry-level jobs aren’t particularly glamorous. However, some candidates don’t realize they have to work their way up to powerful positions, which can be a major problem. Asking this question helps you determine the candidate’s expectations, because you don’t want to hire someone who doesn’t have a realistic grasp on the job.
