Is an Updated LinkedIn Profile A “Good Enough” Resume? Or Should You Really Work on a Well-Crafted One-Sheet?

You’re interested in pursuing new opportunities, but right now, you don’t have a resume. However, you’re not sure if you really need one, because you’re diligent about keeping your LinkedIn profile updated.

As the world’s largest professional network, LinkedIn has more than 810 million members in over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Given the enormity of the platform, the possibilities on LinkedIn are nearly limitless — but that doesn’t mean your profile is a replacement for your resume.

Here’s why you need both an updated LinkedIn profile and a well-crafted one-sheet.

Everyone Isn’t on LinkedIn.

Clearly, more professionals than not are on LinkedIn. However, everyone isn’t on it, and even many of those with a profile aren’t active on the site. Therefore, if you’re solely relying on your LinkedIn profile to market you for a new job, you’re limiting yourself exclusively to employers who are active on the site. This could cause you to miss out on your dream job, so it’s best to cover more bases by having a resume.

LinkedIn Resumes Aren’t Always Accepted.

When applying for a job, you’ll almost always need a resume. In some cases, an applicant tracking system might allow you to submit your LinkedIn profile instead of a resume, but not always. Plus, many companies prefer to receive applications by email, which almost definitely guarantees they expect to receive a traditional resume — not a URL for your LinkedIn profile.

Not Having a Resume Can Be a Hassle for Employers.

In most cases, several people from a company work together to make hiring decisions. Having a resume makes it easy for each person to print it off, use it for reference during the interview and make notes to discuss among themselves. Not having a resume can cause headaches, because interviewers have to have their computer in front of them to learn about you and refresh their memory on your skills and experience.

Anything that causes a hassle for employers won’t work in your favor, because people want to hire candidates that make their lives easier.
