The Stress From COVID-19 Can Be Real. Learn How To Achieve Balance

Almost overnight, COVID-19 changed the way we live. Whether you’re practicing social distancing at home or an essential worker scared to do your job, living in a pandemic isn’t easy.

Please know you’re not alone. Most people have never experienced a pandemic, so everyone is trying to figure out how to navigate this — temporary — new normal. Here’s some advice to help you de-stress and find some much-needed relaxation in the midst of the chaos.

Take a Break From the News

Being informed is important, but only so much new information is released each day. Constantly watching the news — or reading it online — accomplishes nothing but leaving you in a permanent state of panic. Allow yourself to briefly catch up on the latest happenings a couple of times per day, then stop.

Follow a Healthy Diet

No doubt, you’re craving comfort food all the time during this pandemic. It’s fine to indulge yourself sometimes but focus on maintaining an overall healthy diet. Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have nutrients your body needs to stay strong and healthy, which is more important than ever right now.

Find Creative Ways to Exercise

If you typically exercise at the gym or outdoors, you might not be able to follow the same routine right now. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still stay fit. There’s no shortage of fitness professionals offering online workouts right now — and many are free — so don’t be afraid to switch your exercise regimen up a bit.

Connect With Family and Friends Virtually

You can’t physically spend time with loved ones who aren’t part of your household right now, but that doesn’t mean you can’t stay in touch. Videoconferencing tools — i.e., Zoom, Duo, FaceTime, Skype — make it possible to have face-to-face conversations from afar. This is a fun way to catch up and enjoy quality time with people you care about.

Focus on Gratitude

Living in a pandemic is scary and awful, but you still have a lot to be thankful for. Calm your mind by taking inventory of all the blessings in your life. This will put things in perspective and help you concentrate on the positive instead of feeling panicked about things you can’t control.
