How to Create a Personal Brand While Looking for a Job

Branding is no longer a feature exclusive to companies. These days, job seekers are expected to have a strong personal brand that tells potential employers who they are and highlights the unique qualities they have to offer.

If you’ve already launched your job search or are getting ready to do so, it’s time to get to work building your brand. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Create a Brand Statement

Essentially your own personal tagline, your brand statement offers a look at who you are and what you have to offer. Consisting of one or two sentences, the statement should underline your strengths, what makes you stand out from the competition and your target audience.

If you aren’t sold on the idea of a brand statement, take a closer look at what it can do for you. Say you’re an office manager. Simply stating this on a resume or a social media profile won’t turn heads. However, specifying exactly who you are, what you do and who you serve will make an impact.

When writing your statement, be true to yourself. This will allow you to garner the right kind of buzz to help you land your dream job.

Be a Social (Media) Butterfly

Maximize your reach by choosing several social media platforms relevant to your career — for example, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook — and using them to network.

One of the most important aspects of branding is consistency, so use the same profile picture and bio — it’s ok if the wording varies a little, but make sure it sends the same message — for all your accounts. Encourage people to follow you on each platform by posting different content on all accounts, making sure it conveys a uniform message across the board.

Establish a Strong Network

Increase your visibility by enhancing your contact list. Use your social media accounts to make new connections online. Join LinkedIn groups, follow influencers and post meaningful comments on other people’s posts. This is a great way to connect with companies you’re interested in joining and individuals who might be able to assist with your job search.
