Tips For Making Sure Your New Employee’s First Day is a Success

You just hired a new employee you’re really excited about. Right now, you’re thrilled the hiring process has finally come to an end and eager to get this new person on board. Their first day is soon, so it’s time to start preparing for their arrival.

First impressions hold a lot of weight, and that extends to new hires on their first day. If the person doesn’t feel welcome, they’ll likely second-guess their decision to accept the job. Avoid this by using these three tips to make day one on the job a success.

Alert the Team in Advance

In the days leading up to your new hire’s arrival, let your team know someone new will soon be joining the ranks. Gather them together to discuss their soon-to-be team member’s background, their role at your company and their start date. This is a great time to address any questions they have, so everyone knows the new person wasn’t hired to step on their toes.

It’s also wise to send a follow-up email the day before the person’s arrival as a reminder.

Take Them on an Introductory Tour

Coming into a new work environment where you don’t know anyone is intimidating. Ease the pressure by walking the person around the office to make introductions on their first day. Warm welcomes from your existing employees will make them feel more comfortable and excited to get to know their new peers. This is also a great first step in helping them put faces to names, which of course will take a while.

Make a Game Plan

Ushering your new hire into their workspace and having them watch training videos might be easy for you, but it won’t amuse them. Most likely, you’ll have at least a couple weeks from their date of hire to their first day, so take the time to plan meaningful assignments for them. Help them get acclimated by having them meet with other employees to learn what they do, creating helpful training tasks and ensuring there’s enough room in your schedule to spend plenty of time with them.
