Why It’s Important to Take Criticism Seriously to Help With Your Professional Development

If you’re like most people, you’re not a huge fan of criticism. Less-than-flattering feedback doesn’t feel great, so it’s easy to brush the comments off as nonsense. However, having thin skin won’t get you very far in life.

Critiques are an opportunity to grow, so you have to take the bad with the good. Instead of viewing negative comments as a personal attack, consider them to be constructive criticism. Of course, all assessments don’t hold equal weight, so use these tips to get the most from them.

Consider the Source

It would be much easier to accept criticism if you knew it always came from a good place, but unfortunately some people aren’t genuine. If you receive negative feedback from a colleague or manager who doesn’t see eye-to-eye with you, try not to take it to heart.

When a critique truly doesn’t reflect you, it’s best to just let it roll off your shoulders. Your gut will tell you if you’re guilty of asserting the behaviors you’re accused of, and if you know you’re not, don’t let the person get under your skin.

Be Honest With Yourself

Sometimes negative critiques are spot on. If you know you’re guilty of an action noted in an undesirable assessment, don’t try to shield yourself from the truth. Hearing the words come out of the other person’s mouth will sting a bit, but it’s for the best.

No one is perfect, so don’t beat yourself up over an unflattering evaluation that you know is right. Instead, accept responsibility for your behavior, learn from it and allow it to make you an even better version of yourself.

Make a Change for the Better

Critiques can be rough, but they have the ability to bring incredible change. When you know something unflattering said about you is right, allow it to propel your growth. If the other person didn’t speak up, you might not have realized you needed to change, so criticism is hugely important to your professional evolution.
