Don’t Make These 3 Career Blunders

It’s often said that hindsight is 20/20, and this certainly applies to your career. The actions you take today can largely impact where you’ll be 10 or 20 years from now, so you must be wise with your choices. Acting on impulse or going against the system may seem like the best move — and sometimes it is — but you need to weigh the consequences before proceeding, because you could be dealing with them for years to come.

Some career mistakes are immediately obvious, while it takes years to realize the implications of others. You can’t avoid all mishaps, but take this advice and steer clear of the three blunders below.

  1. Staying in a Job Too Long

Finding a job you really enjoy isn’t easy, so it can be very tempting to stay when you’re no longer learning and growing. It’s certainly a difficult decision to make, but you can’t continue in a job where you’re just treading water. Every job you hold should be a learning experience, but a point typically comes where you’ve accomplished everything there is for the position. When this happens, you have to move on, because if you’re not learning, you’re impeding your future career prospects.

  1. Burning Bridges

You’ve met plenty of people thus far in your career that you didn’t like, and you’ll meet plenty more — that’s life. While you may dream about telling your boss what you really think of him on your last day of work or snapping back at a notoriously rude client, you just can’t do that. The business world is much smaller than you think, and gossip travels fast. Behaving badly will tarnish your reputation and if — likely when — you come across the person in the future, they will remember this incident. Forget using them as a reference or getting hired by one of their associates, because it won’t happen.

  1. Avoiding Social Media in All Forms

These days, it seems like everyone is obsessed with social media, so it’s understandable if you want to steer clear of it. However, having no social footprint can seriously hinder your job search, so you need to at least maintain a professional presence. At minimum, create an account on LinkedIn and one other social network, using these platforms to present yourself as an industry expert. Follow major influencers from your industry, regularly share your thoughts on topics pertinent to your line of work, join relevant groups and keep your profiles updated.
